• Are you aged 16-22?
  • Do you have recent lived experience of being an inpatient in an adolescent mental health unit in England?
  • Would you like to be involved in some research with the University of Salford?

We are looking for a small group of 16-22 year olds to join a Young People's Advisory Group.

The Project:

This research project aims to improve care quality and outcomes for children and young people who require intensive, therapeutic mental health care provision. To do this the researchers need to develop a better understanding of care quality and outcomes for those currently receiving this level of care.

It is funded by a charitable donation to the National Association of Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (NAPICU) and is being undertaken in partnership with the University of Salford.

About the Advisory Group:

You will be offering a young person’s lived experience perspective to a research team working at the University of Salford.

This will include providing a young person’s perspective and feedback on surveys, developed to share with those currently in inpatient units. Later on in the study, you will support researchers in analysing the data collected through survey responses.

If any of this sounds confusing don't worry we'll explain it all when we meet.

What’s the time commitment?

There will be 7 meetings in total, 3 to support survey development, and 4 for data analysis after the surveys have been shared. We ask that you consider if you can commit to all meetings prior to applying:

Survey development:

  • Thursday 10th July 6-8pm
  • Thursday 14th August 6-8pm
  • Thursday 18th September 6-8pm

Data Analysis:

  • Date in November 2025 to be confirmed
  • Date in August 2026 to be confirmed
  • Date in October 2026 to be confirmed
  • Date in February 2027 to be confirmed

How will I be using my lived experience?

The advisory group is about informing the research by using the voices of young people who have lived experience. This doesn't mean that you need to share your experiences of mental health care. You will be asked to share your views and thoughts, which will be shaped by your lived experience, about the information the researchers present you with.

Interested?

To join the group or to find out more, fill in our contact form by clicking on the button below and we'll be in touch to arrange a one-to-one chat on Zoom. We'll let you know a bit more about the group and what you will get out of being a member also.  Please note - we may not be able to offer places to everyone who applies.
